We currently have an opportunity for a Research & Development Engineering Manager to join our team located at our plant in Appleton, WI.

Your Role:

We are looking for a Research & Development Engineering Manager with expertise in plastic extrusion and film conversion processes. In this role, you will be responsible for the technical efforts to advance product development and process optimization projects through an R&D team. You will be involved in producing concepts, designs, performance calculations, failure analysis, and drawings for material handling equipment and systems. This position will be responsible for testing prototypes and creating test reports. The ideal candidate will thrive in a hands-on environment, driving technical improvements, and playing a key role in the research and development of both new and existing products. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Conduct R&D product trials to validate new concepts, modifications, and product enhancements.
  • Lead process improvements to enhance the performance, efficiency, and quality of new and existing products.
  • Perform root cause analysis to diagnose issues and create forward-thinking solutions.
  • Research new technological advancements and trial proof of concepts with potential to implement into our manufacturing processes.
  • Train team members on updated and new processes, ensuring seamless implementation and operational excellence.
  • Manage the stage gate process for product launches, resin qualifications, and product extensions.
  • Develop detailed testing protocols utilizing the product test lab, perform cost analysis, and deliver comprehensive reports on findings.
  • Utilize project management skills to oversee and execute multiple R&D initiatives on time.
  • Analyze large datasets, extracting insights to drive product innovation and continuous improvement.

We need you to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Material Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in plastics manufacturing, with a focus on R&D and extrusion/converting processes.
  • Hands-on experience with materials such as LLDPE, LDPE, HDPE, or similar.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to balance multiple projects and timelines.
  • Exceptional analytical skills for managing large datasets and turning insights into actionable solutions.
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities, coupled with a willingness to adapt and innovate.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with experience in training and leading cross-functional team.

Icing on the cake:

  • In depth knowledge of Plastics Processing and packaging equipment used in the CPG industry.
  • A commitment to excellence and continuous improvement with experience in various Continuous improvement Processes and initiatives (i.e. 5S, Value Streams, Six Sigma, TPM).
  • Previous experience in a CPG company.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Proficient in SAP.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills and the ability to communicate and influence at all levels within the organization.
