We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Engineer, Waste & Storage Operations to join our Technical Team at our Hefty manufacturing plant in Jacksonville, IL.

Your Role:

The Sr. Engineer will collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing and the business team to deliver new technologies & products to the Marketplace. This role is part of the RDE Materials Engineering team reporting to the Sr Innovation & Materials Manager and focuses on materials and extrusion development activities for the Hefty Waste & Storage business unit. You will focus on product development and process engineering activities and provide the business unit with materials related technical expertise. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead projects to support and achieve Marketing Innovation, Material cost saving and Operational efficiency objectives.
  • Complete key activities to support new product development: Define product scale up strategies, define appropriate material formulation/blends, prepare trial plans, guide technicians in preparation and execution of material trials, provide direction to laboratory personnel regarding product test methods, complete trial data statistical analysis, report results to business development teams, establish material & product specifications, maintain documentation, provide technical product support through manufacturing startup.
  • Collaborate with the RDE conversion team to establish and execute trial plans.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Ensure evaluation & approval of all materials by Safety & Regulatory. Provide leadership in maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Provide technical recommendations to Operations teams as needed.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with raw material suppliers. Identify cost savings opportunities and evaluate feasibility.
  • Qualify new materials/technologies as required.
  • Periodically travel to alternate manufacturing sites to provide technical support (focus is on new product startups).
  • Periodically prepare project updates & recommendations for Marketing & leadership. Maintain development tracking & specification documentation. 
  • Support Operations by providing technical guidance as a subject matter expert.
  • Be results driven, have solid project execution capabilities and collaborate fluidly with the cross-functional teams.
  • Engage with resin & additive suppliers to maintain knowledge of new technologies and identify cost savings opportunities.
  • Maintain and develop personal technical knowledge base.

We need you to have:

  • BS in Engineering (Chemical or Polymers, preferred).
  • 8-10 years relevant experience in a technical role; experience in R&D and/or manufacturing environments, preferred.
  • Demonstrated success collaborating with multi-disciplined team.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience developing new products and manufacturing processes, preferred.
  • Knowledge of the resins & additives used and their functionality in the products and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of the extrusion manufacturing process and how changes impact finished product properties and quality.
  • Ability to understand the industry & RCP business objectives as well as the role of materials in finished product costs.

Icing on the cake:

  • Plastics manufacturing background, especially in Blown Film Extrusion.
  • Process engineering experience with operational improvements.
  • Understanding of SAP and CMMS system software.
