Your Role:

As a Packaging Engineer you will design, develop, specify, and test packaging which protects and satisfactorily delivers the product to the consumer under the following guidelines: Satisfies Marketing objectives, Meets profitability guidelines, Technically functional, and Innovative with a point of difference to the consumer. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead design and material explorations/improvements with marketing, design team, manufacturing, procurement, innovation, and/or other cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain accurate packaging specifications in the company’s specification database.
  • Identify and drive quality improvements across all packaging types.
  • Champion sustainability and environmental stewardship by driving innovation to increase recyclability, increase recycled content, and material reduction for packaging and displays with consideration for key customer initiatives, programs, and mandatory and/or regulatory requirements.
  • Establish ‘Best in Class’ line trial systems, including, testing, recording, reporting, implementation steps, and standards across cross-functional teams.
  • Interface with plant manufacturing and Corporate R&D on new or existing products.
  • Identify and focus on reducing packaging damages in the field.
  • Establish the best vendor resources for the tasks required. Work collaboratively with outside suppliers and resources in development of new product and packaging ideas, packaging materials, proof of concept package testing, and implementation of designs.
  • Analyze and develop cost effective packaging options for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging, displays and palletizing with internal teams and external suppliers, which guarantee product integrity across all channels.
  • Own and manage multiple packaging and display projects simultaneously from inception through commercialization.
  • Identify cost savings opportunities – work through resource availability, external constraints, and shared functional or operational resources to identify opportunities for cost avoidance and improvement. Lead implementation and gain alignment with business units/teams.
  • Work with outsourced product manufacturers to develop cost-effective, high-quality primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging and display solutions for domestic and international customers and markets.
  • Conduct all necessary packaging testing (self-testing and third-party lab testing) and shipping performance trials to establish or validate new packaging and/or display specifications.
  • Creation/coordination of packaging drawings (internally or externally) as necessary.
  • Use of pallet pattern software for optimizing unit loads and providing packaging analyses to Marketing and Sales teams for Profit and Loss studies.
  • Provide troubleshooting expertise for materials and/or processes, damage/performance issues root cause analyses, and issue mitigation.
  • Qualify new materials/vendors for manufacturing processes.
  • Prepare research, reports, and memos as required for support of business unit objectives.
  • Assist Marketing and Product Commercialization teams with project timeline development and tracking.
  • Travel to plant or vendor locations in performance of duties. Travel is project dependent and ranges from 3% up to 5%.

We need you to have:

  • BS in Packaging Engineering (preferred) or equivalent work experience.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience as a Packaging Engineer.
  • High degree of creativity, ability to work both independently and with cross-functional teams.
  • Driven to achieve great results throughout the development process.
  • Ability to work effectively with limited direction on multiple projects.
  • Project management skills.
  • Familiarity with carton and corrugated properties and performance.
  • Technical Background with a deep understanding of design principles, packaging and display material types, converting processes, manufacturing, filling/packing processes, and packaging and palletized load performance in various warehousing and shipping environments.
  • Strong Prioritization Skills, understanding time constraints.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills to influence, problem solve, drive decisions, and complete projects.
  • Familiarity with warehouse/distribution processes.
  • Experience in point of purchase display development at retail and club channels.
  • Knowledge of international transit rules/restrictions/regulations/capabilities.
  • Ability to travel (5%).
