We are searching for a Quality and Product Safety Lab Technician to join our team located at our office in Appleton, WI.

Your Role:

The Quality and Product Safety Lab Technician focuses on both product safety and quality.  This position ensures product safety with respect to Good Manufacturing Practices for raw materials, finished products, and packaging with verification through microbiological testing. This includes finished goods imports, domestic outsourced and domestically-produced products. This individual will maintain the microbiology lab and perform microbiological testing as well as coordinate outside laboratory testing as needed. This position is also responsible for data entry for corporate quality complaints, as well as preparation and shipment of product samples. 

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Maintain Microbiology laboratory, including test procedures, scheduling, equipment repair and maintenance, supplies, internal quality control and safety.
  • Research and document unique microbiological test procedures for new or competitor products.
  • Train laboratory technicians and QS personnel in other locations in basic microbiological procedures and laboratory practices and water testing.
  • Perform weekly chemical and microbiological water testing and food contact product microbial screening quarterly; analyze data and issues reports for all locations.
  • Train and act as resource for water testing at other Presto locations.
  • Follow up on unsatisfactory water results for all Presto facilities.
  • Coordinate annual taste and odor testing on all food contact product types and perform microbiological testing on customer complaints, production samples, and other potential contamination, for all locations.
  • Perform appropriate microbiological testing on customer complaints, production samples, and any other contamination question.
  • Use knowledge of sanitation and hygiene to work with manufacturing to maintain Good Manufacturing Practices and insure Product Safety.
  • Monitor food contact areas for water quality, equipment cleanliness, and hygiene issues. Work with QS on sanitation/hygiene and other issues involving microbial contamination or the potential of contamination.
  • Work with BRC Practitioners to comply with all microbiological testing needs.
  • Work with Quality Assurance personnel to insure the product integrity of internal and outsourced products is maintained, along with GMPs.
  • Work closely with Reynolds Regulatory Compliance Manager to understand and apply any new laws regarding food safety.
  • Responsible for complying with the BRCGS and GMP practices and programs to ensure safe food packaging product and to report food safety problems to those with authority to take action.
  • Research and coordinate outside laboratory testing of products, raw materials or packaging for analyses outside the scope of Presto’s lab capabilities.
  • Order, prioritize, process, and ship samples requests.
  • Communicate sample request status and maintain accurate records of shipments.
  • Keep sample carton and finished goods inventories current.
  • Maintain shipping UPS type labels.
  • Classify and enter quality complaints into the database.
  • Interface with customer websites to obtain or enter quality information.
  • Perform work in a safe manner that protects and promotes the health and well-being of the individual and the environment.

We need you to have:

  • BS in Life Science or Microbiology Laboratory experience
  • 2+ years of experience in a Lab Testing/Quality/Quality Assurance role relating to food contact product microbial screening
  • Be able to perform qualitative and quantitative microbiological tests, make and follow through on decisions based on fact and logic
  • Good problem-solving, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills as well as organizational skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent data entry and computer skills (Microsoft Office)
  • Must be comfortable working autonomously
  • Can juggle multiple tasks within a fast-paced environment

Icing on the cake:

  • 5+ years of lab technician experience, preferred
  • Comprehensive understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices for Food Packaging facilities
  • Basic knowledge of Quality Assurance tools, policies and procedures
  • Understand BRCGS requirements and standards
  • Mailroom experience, familiar with UPS rules/regulations
